SMBC is seeking a VP to play an active role in the development and enhancement of its policies across its Americas Division (AD), Combined U.S. Operations (CUSO), and Bank Holding Company (BHC). The individual will be expected to lead policy development projects, assess current policy frameworks, and enhance and develop AD, CUSO, and BHC level policies and charters. Lead Policy Development and Enhancement Project. Write AD/CUSO/BHC level policies and charters ensuring effectiveness, consistency, and adherence to internal and external (e.g., market and regulatory) standards. Maintain awareness of market best practices and regulatory requirements for financial institutions. Develop, coordinate, and implement solutions that remediate gaps caused by changes to regulatory and business requirements. Work with stakeholders across the first, second, and third lines of defense to enhance existing AD/CUSO/BHC policies, charters, and overall governance framework. Communicate the status of projects, initiatives, and deliverables to Senior Management. Respond to ad-hoc policy related requests from stakeholders (i.e., audit, regulators, etc.). Support the Regulatory & Governance Director in managing, and preparing material for, management and board level committee meetings. Support the management of the Americas Division Conduct & Culture Program. Work with and supervise outside consultants as necessary. Provide support to other ad-hoc regulatory and governance related projects as required. Bachelor s degree (or higher) in finance and/or legal. 5 years or more of experience in the financial services, preferably in governance or risk. 2 years of technical policy writing experience. Understanding of regulations applicable to Foreign Banking Organizations (FBOs). Strong communication (written and oral) skills, including the ability to liaise with and influence senior subject matter experts. Excellent relationship building and project management skills. Proven track record of formulating a vision and following through with its sound execution. Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines with limited supervision. Willingness to challenge the status quo and be an agent of change. Strong analytical skills, sound judgement capabilities, and the ability to assess complex proposals. Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Japanese language skills is a plus, but not required. Overtime as needed.
